Dr. Franklin Ampy (1936-2020)

Dear Howard University Community,

I regret to inform you of the recent passing of Dr. Franklin R. Ampy, retired Professor in the Department of Biology. A native of Dinwiddie, Virginia, Dr. Ampy served at Howard University for over 49 years as a faculty member in the Department of Biology. After completing high school, Dr. Ampy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Biology from Virginia State University. He then completed a Master of Science degree in Genetics and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Genetics from Oregon State University. His postdoctoral training in Genetics was completed at the University of California at Davis. Following service as an Assistant Professor at the American University in Lebanon, and Associate Dean at the University of California at Davis, Dr. Ampy joined Howard University as an Associate Professor in 1971.

Moving quickly through the academic ranks, Dr. Ampy served as a statistical consultant to M.S. and Ph.D. students and was a recognized authority in Biostatistics. He conducted research, and published on various topics focusing on statistical analyses of genetic disorders. This area of research had national and international implications, as collaborations were established with scientists throughout the United States and the world. These scholarship efforts resulted in significant external funding for research activities, and the acquisition of state of the art equipment, supporting the research pursuits of numerous graduate students.

Dr. Ampy was a stalwart of the Department of Biology. His contributions in teaching, administration, and selfless service can not be overstated. He served willingly in various capacities as Interim Chairman and Chairman of the Department, and on various dissertation committees, as well as University Committees.  Arrangements for a memorial service for Dr. Ampy are being planned by his family, and will be announced to the University community once scheduled. The Department of Biology will also conduct a ceremony in honor of Dr. Ampy at a time to be scheduled in the future.  Please keep the Ampy Family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
